Dr. Todd McMullen, MD
Chairman of the Board
Dr. Todd McMullen is a fellowship trained endocrine surgeon with specialized training in thyroid ultrasound techniques.
Dr. Todd McMullen’s academic background is in Biochemistry and Physiology. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta, then completed a Medical Research Council of Canada Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Department of Physiology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Having received his PhD and additional training in Physiology, Dr. McMullen went on to complete medical school at the University of Toronto and a residency in General Surgery at the University of Alberta. He further specialized in Endocrine Surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia, where he finished a TS Reeve Fellowship in Endocrine Surgery.
Since that time, Dr. McMullen has been an active member of the University of Alberta staff as part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, where he now holds positions in Surgery and Oncology (Division of General Surgery), an Adjunct appointment in the Division of Endocrinology (Department of Medicine) and also serves as the Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology (Department of Oncology) based at the Cross Cancer Institute.
In his role as Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology he has participated in the creation of clinical care pathways both provincially and nationally for thyroid and parathyroid disease, and has undertaken a number of important initiatives regarding synoptic reporting for surgical oncologists. Dr. McMullen is also one of the leaders of the national Head and Neck Cancer Committee for the Canadian Association of General Surgeons.
Chris Eagle, PhD
Dr. Eagle is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Calgary. Previously, he was President and CEO of the Calgary Health Trust, a philanthropic foundation with assets exceeding $100M. He served for three years as President and CEO of Alberta Health Services (AHS). Prior to the formation of AHS, he was President and COO of the Calgary Health Region. He has served on many healthcare Boards, including those of the Canadian Institute of Health Information, the Health Quality Council of Alberta, Wellspring Edmonton, Wellness Alberta, the O’Brien Institute of Public Health, Calgary Health Trust, Edmonton’s Boyle Macauley Health Centre, and Alberta’s Bone and Joint Health Institute.
Deborah E. James, BSc (Pharm) PhD
Dr. James has more than 15 years of academic, executive and consulting experience in life sciences and healthcare. She currently leads the University of Alberta’s Innovation Office that develops and executes initiatives to enhance the capacity, culture and success of innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization across campus. This includes oversight of the University’s technology transfer and business development offices. As the former Executive Director of Innovation for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, Dr. James worked extensively across the public and private sector to create, connect and implement large-scale initiatives that demonstrated value to care providers, industry and the University. Her particular interests are in translating new disruptive innovations into health systems, with a focus on precision diagnostics, point-of-care testing, and digital health. Dr. James consults to the pharmacy sector with expertise in the implementation of point-of-care testing into practice. She received her degree in clinical pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Alberta (1989) and completed her PhD (1996) studying the neuro-immunological basis of airways disease. She was previously a Clinical Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and has taught extensively in the fields of therapeutics, toxicology, pharmacology, immunology and disease mechanisms.
John Liston is the President of Alberta Enterprise Group. He has been involved on various boards including Caritas Health the precursor to Covenant Health.
John Liston is the president of the Alberta Enterprise Group, a network of businesses that provide leadership in public policy in Alberta by advancing ideas and innovations that enhance the quality of life for all Albertans, promote entrepreneurship and corporate responsibility. After 30 years in the Financial Services industry, John has spent the last several years coaching and working closely with entrepreneurs, and in discussions about Alberta’s future prosperity.
Kris Mauthe, CPA, CMA
Kris Mauthe possesses over 25 years of financial leadership within organizations experiencing exponential change. Having articled at KPMG with a focus on small and medium enterprises, Kris transitioned to the manufacturing sector where he expanded his skillset with a focus on cultural development, operational efficiencies and building long term strategies to overcome market uncertainty in markets around the globe.
Most recently Kris held the position of President & CEO at Argus Machine where in that position he successfully led the Team to increase productivity over 40%, grow export business to over 60% of overall revenues, and enhanced employee morale to unprecedented levels through inspiring community contributions. Kris currently serves on the Board of Governors at NAIT and holds various positions in non-profit organizations.
Roger Swainson, Q.C.
Roger Swainson, Q.C., is a lawyer and a founding partner of the law firm Swainson Miki Peskett LLP and the leader of its real estate and lending group. Roger’s practice revolves around commercial real estate, primarily focusing on commercial lending and finance transactions. Roger’s clients include institutional and private lenders, both national and local, as well as commercial real estate owners and other industry professionals. Roger’s experience, problem-solving skills, and ability to structure and facilitate large-scale transactions in a timely manner sets him above his peers in the legal industry. Roger also has a great deal of experience in counselling start up companies in the diagnostics field. Roger is active in the area of medical philanthropy as Chairman of the Board of the Cure Cancer Foundation and as the chair of the “Bird Dog” Committee, which created and funds the Frank and Carla Sojonky Chair in Prostate Cancer Research at the University of Alberta, enabling world-class research to find a better way to detect and treat prostate cancer.
A 30 year veteran building growth companies, as both an owner and a business consultant, Darren has established a growing list of clients specializing in strategic insight and planning. Alongside Darren’s consulting business, Darren manages a portfolio of operating companies and real estate investments. Early on in Darren’s career he was part of the Katz Group launching franchised pharmacies in Canada. Darren has held senior leadership and ownership positions at a variety of organizations in healthcare, telecommunications, heavy equipment and communications. Darren is a tireless fundraiser focused supporting Cancer research and Patient care and a founding member of Cure Cancer Foundation.
